Tata Communications Plans $400–450 Million AI Super Highway Across India

5 Min Read

The proposed 10,000-km fibre network will connect major data-centre hubs, beginning with the Mumbai–Pune–Hyderabad–Chennai corridor.

Tata Communications plans to invest $400–450 million in an AI Super Highway, a network of approximately 10,000 kilometres of new long-haul fibre connecting key data-centre and artificial intelligence hubs across India.

Announced on 26 October 2026, the investment focuses on the connections that allow information to move between computing facilities, cloud networks and businesses. The company intends to expand the infrastructure in three phases and integrate it with its international network.

The project reflects a practical requirement of AI adoption: processing capacity needs dependable connectivity. As businesses use more data-intensive applications, the speed, capacity and reliability of the networks linking their systems become increasingly important.

What Is the AI Super Highway?

The AI Super Highway is Tata Communications’ name for its planned connectivity infrastructure linking data centres and AI hubs.

Long-haul fibre carries information over substantial distances, connecting cities and regional networks. Data-centre interconnection enables facilities to exchange information and gives businesses access to computing resources located elsewhere.

For an enterprise, this could support moving business data to a cloud environment, accessing an AI application or connecting systems operating in different locations.

The network’s practical value will depend on several factors working together:

  • Capacity: How much data the connection can carry.
  • Latency: How long information takes to travel between locations.
  • Resilience: How effectively service continues when equipment or a route experiences a problem.
  • Scalability: How easily capacity can expand as customer requirements grow.

These characteristics influence the experience of using digital services. Additional computing power alone cannot resolve delays caused by a congested or unreliable connection.

Why the Initial Corridor Matters

The first phase will focus on Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai, followed by connections into emerging data-centre locations in eastern and western India.

The planned geography brings together established infrastructure centres and locations where additional capacity is developing. Connecting these areas would give customers more options for moving information between facilities.

From a business perspective, a phased rollout allows construction and service availability to develop progressively. Customers may be able to use completed sections while work continues elsewhere.

The announcement identifies the broad expansion locations. Detailed availability for individual routes and customer sites will depend on the implementation programme.

Construction and Revenue Timeline

According to Financial Express, the investment will be funded through operating cash flows and deployed over three to five years.

Engineering and route planning were underway at the time of the announcement, while physical construction had not begun. The publication reported a possible start in Q4 FY27, subject to vendor selection.

That quarter corresponds to January–March 2027. Revenue from some routes is expected in FY28 and FY29 as capacity becomes available.

These are rollout expectations. The announcement does not mean the entire proposed network is already operational.

Why AI Applications Need Stronger Networks

AI systems often depend on information moving between applications, data stores, cloud services and users. Network performance can therefore influence how quickly a service responds and how consistently it operates.

In its published discussion of AI infrastructure, Tata Communications identifies changing traffic patterns, continuous inference and communication between software agents as pressures on traditional networks.

The practical implication is that businesses need to understand how their applications use connectivity. A system processing periodic batches of information may have different requirements from one responding continuously to customer requests.

Predictable performance can be as important as peak speed. A connection that performs well during a demonstration may still need sufficient capacity and operational support to handle changing demand.

For customers evaluating the proposed network, meaningful measures will include actual route latency, service availability, bandwidth options and recovery arrangements.

Connecting Indian Data Centres to Global Networks

The domestic expansion fits into Tata Communications’ wider connectivity business.

The company’s published disclosures describe a network spanning more than 500,000 km of subsea fibre and 200,000 km of terrestrial fibre. Its India–Singapore investment programme includes additional subsea connectivity involving Mumbai and Chennai.

A planned Chennai–Singapore cable system has an expected ready-for-service date in Q4 2029, according to that programme’s announcement. This is a separate subsea timetable from the new domestic fibre rollout.

Combining domestic routes with international capacity could help customers connect Indian operations with computing facilities and business systems overseas.

The benefit will depend on the complete connection. Local access, domestic transport and international links all contribute to the performance a customer experiences.

Building on Existing AI Connectivity Work

Tata Communications has already announced work with Amazon Web Services on an AI-ready long-distance network connecting AWS infrastructure in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai.

That collaboration concerns connections between AWS locations and illustrates an existing use case for high-capacity intercity infrastructure.

The broader AI Super Highway announcement targets a wider customer base, including large cloud operators, AI-focused cloud providers, digital platforms, global capability centres and enterprises.

For these customers, a connectivity provider’s role can extend beyond supplying a physical route. Businesses also need network management, visibility into performance and the ability to accommodate changing demand.

Tata Communications’ existing IZO Data Centre Dynamic Connectivity offering addresses some of these requirements through software-controlled capacity and automated traffic rerouting.

The Commercial Opportunity

Tata Communications estimates that India’s data-centre-to-data-centre connectivity market could exceed $1 billion over the medium term.

That figure is the company’s assessment of the market opportunity, rather than revenue already secured from the proposed project.

Managing director and CEO Ganesh Lakshminarayanan said an increasing proportion of the company’s expansion is supported by anchor customer commitments and contracted demand.

From a commercial perspective, matching construction with customer requirements can help determine which routes receive investment first. Long-term value will depend on how much capacity customers use, the services they purchase and the cost of building and operating the network.

The important milestones will now be construction starts, completed routes, customer activation and revenue generation. Those developments will show how the announced investment translates into working infrastructure for India’s expanding digital economy.
