Upasana Taku: From Silicon Valley to MobiKwik’s ₹572 Crore IPO

5 Min Read

The former PayPal professional helped build MobiKwik from an online recharge service into a listed Indian fintech company, alongside co-founder Bipin Preet Singh.

Upasana Taku left a career in the United States to build a business in India’s emerging digital payments market. Her journey with MobiKwik began when paying for something as ordinary as a mobile recharge still frequently meant visiting a shop.

Working with Bipin Preet Singh, she helped develop that everyday problem into a payments business that would eventually reach the public markets.

MobiKwik completed its ₹572 crore initial public offering in December 2024 and listed on the BSE and NSE on 18 December 2024. The milestone followed roughly 15 years of building products, recruiting teams, raising capital and adapting to a changing market.

Upasana Taku Education and Career in the US

Upasana Taku studied industrial engineering before completing a master’s degree in Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University.

Upasana Taku professional experience included work at HSBC’s auto finance division in San Diego and a product management role at PayPal in San Jose. At PayPal, her responsibilities covered areas including financial services, global payments and risk.

That background placed her close to the practical demands of digital finance: how transactions work, how products are designed and how risks are managed.

According to MobiKwik’s official biography, Upasana Taku returned to India in 2008. In a later interview with YourStory, she described wanting greater satisfaction from her work and an opportunity to contribute to the business ecosystem back home.

How an Everyday Payment Problem Became MobiKwik

MobiKwik’s early proposition was straightforward: make mobile recharges available online.

In a 2012 account published by The Economic Times, Singh described the inconvenience of repeatedly having to recharge a prepaid phone and the limited online options available at the time.

He began working on the venture full-time in 2009. Taku, who had returned from the US, helped him refine its payment options and subsequently joined the company in 2010.

MobiKwik began operating in 2009, with Taku joining full-time in 2010 after contributing during its early development.

Singh’s account also described adapting payment options to the older web browsers customers were using. The product had to work with the technology people already had.

Building the Company With a Small Team

The early organisation was far removed from a large financial technology platform.

In Upasana Taku 2016 YourStory interview, Taku recalled that the team had six people, including the founders, in 2011. They worked from two rooms in her apartment, with the working day and home life frequently overlapping.

Recruiting was another challenge. Joining a young startup meant accepting uncertainty, and the founders had to persuade people with the required skills to take that chance.

Taku also described the company’s progress towards obtaining a prepaid payment instrument licence from the Reserve Bank of India. MobiKwik applied in September 2012 and received the licence in July 2013, according to her account.

The early years combined product development with recruitment and the work needed to secure regulatory permissions.

Establishing Her Authority in Finance

Upasana Taku responsibilities also brought her into situations where her authority was questioned.

In a 2023 interview with Entrepreneur India, she recalled visiting a government department to address financial queries and being asked to bring her male co-director.

She responded by explaining that she was the person familiar with the tax matters under discussion and could address the questions directly.

The incident illustrates a challenge she has discussed publicly: being responsible for a function while still having to establish that others should deal with her as its decision-maker.

MobiKwik’s current corporate biography identifies Taku as Co-founder, Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, reflecting the financial leadership role she holds within the business.

From Mobile Recharges to a Broader Fintech Platform

Over time, MobiKwik expanded beyond its original recharge service.

Its investor website describes a business connecting consumers and merchants through payments, with additional services covering investments and consumer credit. Merchant offerings include QR-based payment acceptance, soundboxes and card payment devices.

As checked in October 2026, the company’s investor website reports a reach of more than 193 million users and over five million merchants. These are company-reported network figures.

The broader product range changes the operational task. A recharge service solves a specific transaction need; a platform serving consumers and businesses must support several different financial activities reliably.

For the founders, expansion therefore involved building the organisation and partnerships behind those services as well as adding features to an app.

The Longer Road to MobiKwik’s IPO

MobiKwik’s public-market journey took more than one attempt.

The company had pursued an IPO in 2021, but those plans were subsequently shelved. It returned to the market in December 2024 with a smaller offering consisting entirely of newly issued shares.

Reuters reported that the 2024 offer attracted demand for approximately 120 times the shares available for subscription.

The offering brought MobiKwik into a new stage as a company with public shareholders.

Because the offering involved new shares, it raised capital for the company.

The stated uses of the proceeds included expanding financial and payment services, investing in technology and data capabilities, developing the payment devices business and meeting general corporate requirements.

For Taku and Singh, the listing was a major milestone in the transition from a small entrepreneurial venture to a business accountable to public-market investors.

What Stands Out in Upasana Taku’s Founder Journey

Taku’s story connects international professional experience with the work of building for Indian customers.

Her payments background was relevant, but the early product still had to fit local habits, available technology and everyday purchasing behaviour. The recharge service gave the business a specific problem to solve and a practical starting point.

Her responsibilities expanded with the company, combining product and operational decisions with financial management and institutional relationships.

The work that began with making a small payment easier developed into a much broader organisation. The IPO marked that progress, while the continuing business depends on the quality of the services MobiKwik provides to its customers and merchants.
