TuTr Hyperloop and L&T Sign Agreement to Advance India’s Hyperloop Technology

6 Min Read

TuTr Hyperloop and L&T Sign Agreementaimed at accelerating the commercial execution of Hyperloop technology in India. The agreement was announced as a key development at Parivahan 2.0 – Global Hyperloop Summit, organised by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) in partnership with the Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla.

The summit was held on September 19, 2026, at IIT Madras’ Discovery satellite campus in Thaiyur near Chennai. IIT Madras and the Press Information Bureau published details of the event on September 21. The agreement between TuTr Hyperloop and L&T was identified by both official sources as one of the major highlights of the summit.

The partnership comes as Hyperloop development in India moves beyond university research and technology demonstrations toward discussions around commercial applications, particularly in freight movement, port connectivity and logistics.

TuTr Hyperloop and L&T Sign Agreement at Parivahan 2.0

TuTr Hyperloop and L&T signed the agreement during Parivahan 2.0, which brought together representatives from government, ports, railways, logistics companies, industry, academia and research institutions.

According to IIT Madras, the agreement marks an important step toward strengthening industry participation in the development of Hyperloop-related technologies. The PIB described the agreement as a milestone intended to accelerate commercial execution.

The official announcements do not provide detailed commercial terms of the agreement, including the financial value, specific project contract, deployment timeline or precise division of responsibilities between TuTr Hyperloop and L&T.

What is confirmed is that the agreement is connected to the broader effort to move Hyperloop technology toward commercial execution and greater industry participation.

What Was Discussed at the Global Hyperloop Summit

Parivahan 2.0 was organised to examine the development and potential deployment of Hyperloop technology in transportation and logistics.

The summit brought together stakeholders from:

  • Government
  • Ports
  • Railways
  • Logistics
  • Industry
  • Academia
  • Research

The discussions covered Hyperloop technology and infrastructure, freight and logistics, port connectivity, digital transportation systems, sustainability, policy and regulation, industry collaboration, artificial intelligence, automation, deep-tech commercialisation and student innovation.

The summit therefore focused not only on the technology itself but also on the infrastructure, regulatory and commercial requirements needed to develop a wider Hyperloop ecosystem in India.

TuTr Hyperloop and L&T Sign Agreement Work on Indian Hyperloop Technology

TuTr Hyperloop is an IIT Madras-incubated deep-tech startup working on Hyperloop technology. IIT Madras has previously described the company as being created to carry forward the work of the institute’s Hyperloop programme toward commercialisation.

The startup has been involved in developing technologies associated with Linear Induction Motor (LIM) propulsion, magnetic levitation and Hyperloop systems.

IIT Madras has also identified TuTr Hyperloop as part of its efforts to move Hyperloop research from laboratory development toward practical applications. In 2025, the institute said TuTr had developed and demonstrated key Hyperloop technologies, including Linear Induction Motor propulsion, electromagnetic levitation and vacuum-tube operations at the Discovery Campus.

From IIT Madras Research to Commercial Demonstration

The agreement with L&T comes after several years of Hyperloop research and development at IIT Madras.

The institute has been working on Hyperloop technology through interdisciplinary teams involving multiple departments. IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti said at the 2026 summit that the original Hyperloop project involved 72 members across six or seven departments, making it an early interdisciplinary initiative at the institute.

IIT Madras has also developed dedicated Hyperloop testing infrastructure at its Discovery Campus.

In March 2025, the institute said its Hyperloop facility included a 422-metre operational student-run test tube and track. The Railway Ministry had earlier approved ₹8.34 crore for IIT Madras to develop and validate a Hyperloop transportation system and its subsystems.

This research infrastructure has provided a platform for developing and testing Hyperloop-related technologies before their application in larger real-world environments.

Deendayal Port Authority Becomes an Important Testing Ground

One of the most significant developments discussed at the summit was the work being carried out at Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla.

TuTr Hyperloop has been working with the port on a Linear Induction Motor-based mobility technology demonstrator. IIT Madras said the project had progressed from the LIM technology demonstrator toward Maglev technology.

The Deendayal Port Authority had earlier approved the award of work for a LIM-based mobility technology demonstrator to TuTr Hyperloop at a cost of ₹8.70 crore plus GST. The project was approved by the port authority’s board in June 2025.

The development provides a real industrial environment for demonstrating Hyperloop-related mobility technology.

Linear Induction Motor and Magnetic Levitation Technologies

The Parivahan 2.0 summit included technical sessions covering two important technologies associated with Hyperloop development: Linear Induction Motors and magnetic levitation.

Prof. R. K. Shrivastava of IIT (BHU) delivered a technical address on Linear Induction Motor applications. Dr. Shinde, an Outstanding Scientist with the Department of Atomic Energy, addressed magnetic levitation, which IIT Madras described as a core technology for enabling contactless movement of Hyperloop pods.

TuTr Hyperloop’s work at Deendayal Port has also involved LIM-based mobility technology, while the port has been progressing toward a Maglev technology demonstration.

Hyperloop Applications in Freight and Port Logistics

The summit placed considerable attention on freight and logistics rather than focusing only on passenger transportation.

IIT Madras said discussions examined how Hyperloop could potentially be integrated into future transportation networks, particularly for freight movement, port-to-hinterland connectivity and logistics.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, who addressed the summit virtually, said emerging technologies such as Hyperloop could connect ports with logistics parks, warehouses, industrial clusters and inland freight terminals.

He also highlighted the work at Deendayal Port Authority involving TuTr Hyperloop’s LIM technology demonstrator and the subsequent Maglev technology work.

These comments reflect the government’s interest in examining Hyperloop technology for freight and logistics applications.

Why Industry Participation Matters

The TuTr Hyperloop and L&T Sign Agreement comes at a stage where Hyperloop development requires cooperation between technology developers, engineering companies, infrastructure organisations, government agencies and academic institutions.

The Parivahan 2.0 summit specifically addressed the infrastructure, regulatory and commercial requirements associated with developing a Hyperloop ecosystem.

The participation of L&T alongside TuTr Hyperloop adds another industrial stakeholder to the development discussions. IIT Madras described the agreement as an important step in strengthening industry participation in Hyperloop-related technology development.

The official announcements, however, do not specify the exact engineering, construction, investment or deployment responsibilities that L&T will undertake under the agreement.

IIT Madras Continues to Build a Hyperloop Research Ecosystem

The TuTr Hyperloop and L&T Sign Agreement is part of a wider Hyperloop ecosystem being developed around IIT Madras.

The institute has supported student competitions, research infrastructure and commercialisation efforts related to Hyperloop technology.

The Global Hyperloop Competition 2027 was also announced as part of the summit. The next edition is scheduled to be hosted under Shaastra, IIT Madras’ flagship technical festival, providing a platform for students, universities, researchers and startups to develop and demonstrate Hyperloop-related technologies.

Prof. V. Kamakoti also called for Hyperloop clubs at IITs across India and skill-development courses covering areas such as structures, levitation and propulsion, with the possibility of offering courses through SWAYAM and SWAYAM Plus.

The Road From Technology Demonstration to Commercial Execution

TuTr Hyperloop and L&T Sign Agreement to advance India’s Hyperloop technology at a time when the technology is moving through several stages of development in India.

IIT Madras and its partners have established research and testing infrastructure, while TuTr Hyperloop and L&T Sign Agreement has worked on propulsion, levitation and mobility technologies. The Deendayal Port Authority project provides a practical environment for demonstrating LIM-based mobility technology.

The latest agreement with L&T adds an industry collaboration to this development process.

The official sources describe the agreement as supporting commercial execution and greater industry participation, while the wider Parivahan 2.0 discussions focused on the technological, infrastructure, regulatory and commercial requirements for developing Hyperloop applications in India.
